An exciting guided walking tour in Florence historic center, searching traces, more or less visible, that still bear witness to the glorious past of the city

Our itinerary will begin from the place of foundation, the ancient Roman forum of Florence. Together we will discover the importance of this square, where the two main axes of the city crossed and where the Roman Capitol, the most important public temple, was located.

In Roman times the military colony of Florentia had a rectangular plan

and was protected by a wall of terracotta bricks interspersed with numerous circular towers. In the present day Piazza del Duomo we will discover the place where the main north gate of the city was located. Continuing our itinerary we will meet one of the most ancient towers of Florence: the Torre della Pagliazza (the Straw Tower). The perimeter wall of a basin of a Roman thermal building on which the foundations rest gave origin to its very particular semicircular shape.

Just outside the original city walls, in the Santa Croce area, an Amphitheater was built, capable of hosting almost twenty thousand spectators. The elliptical curve of the imposing public structure is still recognizable today in the plan of the current buildings. Reaching the Lungarni, I will then show you the place where was the oldest Roman bridge and the fluvial port of Florence, not far from Ponte Vecchio. We will end the itinerary in Piazza della Signoria, where once we would have seen the Roman Theater, the main Public Baths of the city and the great Fullonica, an industrial plant dedicated to wool processing.
