Santa Maria Novella

In 1279 the Dominican friars began to build a new sanctuary in place of the small church of Santa Maria delle Vigne, assigned to them a few decades earlier when they arrived in Florence for the first time. Thus the basilica of Santa Maria Novella was born. Its elegant facade, designed by the architect Leon Battista Alberti, is a harmonious synthesis of Gothic and Renaissance style. Sober and elegant in its Gothic style, the church of Santa Maria Novella hosts exceptional works of art. Among these we can mention the Holy Trinity by Masaccio, the Crucifix by Giotto, the wooden Crucifix by Brunelleschi, as well as important pictorial cycles by Filippino Lippi, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Paolo Uccello.
